Ball State suffers 2 losses on 2nd day of USA Invitational

After a split on day one of the University of South Alabama Invitational, the Ball State softball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday at the hands of Jacksonville and No. 22 South Alabama.

The Cardinals fell to 6-7 on the season with the losses.

Against Jacksonville in game one, Ball State tallied a five-run lead after four innings. However, the Dolphins rallied to take the lead and ultimately defeat the Cardinals 6-5.

Ball State was led in the game by left-fielder Hanne Steudemann, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

Catcher Jessica Craft and designated player Amanda Arnett added two RBIs apiece.

Junior Nicole Steinbach started on the mound for Ball State, throwing 6.2 innings while allowing 11 hits and three earned runs. She struck out five and walked four.

In game two, Ball State trailed host South Alabama 4-0 after the first inning. After coming back to tie the game, the Cardinals failed to match the Jaguars on offense, losing 14-6.

Offensively, Ball State tallied eight hits. FIrst baseman Hayley Cruthers and shortstop Selena Reyna each had two.

Catcher Shelbie Scamihorn had one hit to go with three RBIs.

The Cardinals used three pitchers in the game. Freshman Carolyn Wilmes pitched 4.1 innings and got the loss. She allowed six runs on eight hits. 

Ball State closes out tournament play at 10 a.m. on Feb. 23 against Chattanooga.
