A late comeback attempt ultimately fell short as the Ball State softball team fell to Chattanooga 10-9 in its final game of the South Alabama Invitational on Sunday.
Ball State drops to 6-8 on the season after going 1-4 over the weekend.
The Cardinals trailed 7-0 after two innings, but fought back to take a 9-8 lead after the top of the seventh inning. However, the Mocs scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game.
Offensively, Ball State was outhit by Chattanooga 12-7. Second baseman Emily Dabkowski was the lone Cardinals with multiple hits on the day with two.
Dabkowski also had an RBI in the game. Catcher Jessica Craft had a two-RBI double and first baseman Sammi Cowger drove in two runs as well.
The Cardinals benefitted from two Mocs' in the game. Ball State had one error on the defensive side.
Junior Nicole Steinbach received the loss on the mound, moving her record to 4-3 so far this season. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.
Sophomore Amanda Arnett threw 2.1 innings, and freshman Carolyn Wilmes pitched 1.2. They combined to give up seven hits and eight earned runs to an explosive Chattanooga offense.
Ball State will look to rebound when it competes in the Purple & Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, La., beginning on Feb. 27.
