HEAD: MEN’S BASKETBALL: Senior Berry breaks three-point record in loss to Bowling Green

Senior Ball State guard Jesse Berry found himself behind Bowling Green’s three-point line for the third time in the game. Berry rose up and fired the deep shot without hesitation.

It went right through the basket, giving Berry the new Ball State record for most three-pointers in a career with 204. Berry would go on to hit two more throughout the game, putting his career mark at 206. However, Ball State would end up losing the game, 64-66.

“It’s an honor to be up there and lead Ball State in [three-pointers],” Berry said. “I just wish we would’ve won. It would’ve been better if we would’ve won.”

In the timeout following Berry’s record-breaking shot, the public announcer informed the crowd at Worthen Arena of the new record holder. Berry received an ovation of applause and cheers from the fans.

Berry now has 48 three-pointers this season. In Berry’s last three years, he hit 60, 50 and 48 three-pointers.

Previously to Berry, former Ball State guard Jauwan Scaife had held the record. Scaife graduated in 2013 and is now a graduate student manager for the team.

“Me and Jauwan always talked about it,” Berry said. “I knew I was close.”

Against Miami on Jan. 18, Berry played just six minutes in a 52-64 loss. Nearly a month later, Berry played a team-high 36 minutes against Bowling Green.

“I talked to the team about Jesse after the game,” Whitford said. “I couldn’t be more proud of him. … I thought he played his best game in a Ball State uniform since I’ve been here.”

Ball State head coach James Whitford said he’s been playing well in practice, but couldn’t pinpoint to a specific moment that changed Berry’s game over the past month.

Berry’s record could be in jeopardy in the near-future. It’s a small sample size, but freshman Zavier Turner has 49 three-pointers this season, putting him on pace for nearly 62 this season. Over the course of a career, Turner is on pace for 247 three-pointers.

“We called [Berry’s] number a lot,” Whitford said. “He made some good plays. … If he plays like that for the next six games, we’re more than capable of putting together some wins.”
