WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State falls to Ohio University in first meet

The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team opened its 2013-14 season with a loss to Ohio University, 162-138 at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.

The Cardinals began the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, one of six events that the team was able to come out victorious in. Senior Bridgette Ruehl was a part of three of those victories, as she posted wins in the 200-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard medley relay.

Seniors Emily Wisolek and Haley Richter won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, respectively. Junior Carlena Magley won the 100-yard freestyle.

Despite the loss, second-year head coach Kristy Castillo said she has a good feeling about this year’s team.

“The vibe of the team was great today,” she said. “They were energized and ready to go. I am proud of the way we battled hard against an Ohio squad, which finished second in the conference meet last season.”

The team, which features 13 underclassmen, is giving Castillo a different challenge than last year.

“We have a young team, and everything is new to them,” she said. “It is my job to keep the team uplifted. Being so young, they do not have any expectations.”

Richter echoed her coach’s sentiments.

“As one of the team captains, I feel like I take a leadership role on the team,” Richter said. “Giving advice to our freshmen and being a good role model that’s worthy of looking up to is something Mallory [Miles] and I want to accomplish as team captains.”

Other than her responsibilities as a captain, Richter said she wants to get everything she can from her final season on the team.

“My personal goal for the season is to just soak everything in, make every race count,” she said. “Because when it’s over, I am going to miss it like crazy.”

Ball State will be back in action on Friday when it travels to East Lansing, Mich., to take on Michigan State University.
