TOO YOUNG TO SLEEP: Bands just want to have fun

The Daily News

Having fun is just what No Coast does.

This Friday, the surf-punk band from Kokomo, Ind. will stop by Muncie’s Be Here Now yet again. No Coast will be joined by their friends Mr. Clit and The Pink Cigarettes, The Kickback from Chicago and Muncie’s own Wine Teeth.

No Coast started when two past members (Nate Black and Mike Wilson) of Indiana hardcore mainstay, In the Face of War, joined forces with fellow Kokomo musician Bryon White. The band has since added Neal Cunningham on organ.

After being involved with the hardcore scene for many years, the members of No Coast united to form a band that was free from the seriousness of hardcore music.

“We were sick of people taking their bands too seriously,” said White, drummer for No Coast. “We just wanted to start a band where it’s fun punk rock that everybody can get down to.”

The band has since visited Muncie on a fairly regular basis, playing many shows at Be Here Now, along with one at Village Green Records.

“It’s all about the energy, and we get good energy from people in Muncie,” White said.

The band plans to release its first full-length album on April 20, coinciding with this year’s Record Store Day.

Wine Teeth’s Ryan Rader has been a fan of No Coast since he first heard their cassette tape demo from May 2012.

“I found a copy of their demo tape laying around the bar after they played a show and took it home and gave it a name and learned to love it,” Rader said.

Carrying a similar “have fun” mantra with Wine Teeth, Rader’s band and No Coast get along quite well.

“I’m not a very good swimmer, so when it comes to coasts, I prefer none,” he said. “I also think they wear appropriate clothes and are nice boys.”

THE INTERVIEWS

When I first approached No Coast, they suggested the idea that they interview me instead of me interviewing them. Considering the kooky personas of the band, as well as Wine Teeth, I thought it’d be fun to have the bands send me questions that I would answer for them. You can read this oddity of an interview below.

No Coast

No Coast: How much money do you make a year before taxes?

Seth Johnson: It’s been all over the place over the past four years, considering I’ve had a variety of jobs and all. I’d say probably less than the average college student does, just because it’s been a lot of minimum wage stuff and unpaid internships.

NC: How many slices of pizza can you eat before you are full?

SJ: I’m a small guy, so I’d say I’m definitely on the smaller end of things. On a good day, I can eat four without being too full. But more often than not, three is where my comfort zone lies.

NC: How many miles is it to El Paso, Texas?

SJ: I’ve been too El Paso once I do believe, passing through on a layover flight or something, but I don’t even remember how long the plane ride was. If I was to guess, I’d say around 2,500 miles, but I honestly have no idea. There are plenty of cities that are ahead of El Paso on my list of must-see cities though.

Wine Teeth

Wine Teeth: Seth, what’s the deal with music? I don’t think I get it.

Seth Johnson: Music isn’t for everyone. For example, take those people that say they like all music. Really guys, you like the old drone chants from the medieval days? Dig into your heart and truly find music you connect with, and don’t just tolerate because it’s on the radio everyday. You don’t have to understand techniques and theories and all that mumbo jumbo to make music shine through to your soul.

WT: Seth, how many marbles are in this jar?

SJ: Well, my birthday is 04/02/1991. 4 + 2 + 91 = 97. I think that’s my guess. Plus, ’97 was a pretty cool year too, I do believe.

WT: Seth, if Wine Teeth and No Coast shared joint custody of a child, would that child graduate high school?

SJ: That’s a tough one. I mean, I was an honors student in high school, but from what I remember, high school wasn’t too difficult. I’m going to say he’d make it by, but only by the skin of his teeth.
