Ball State men’s swimming and diving splits matches against IUPUI, Xavier

Joseph Morris was dialed in as the top finisher for Ball State in its first meet of the new year last week to compete with IUPUI and Xavier in Indianapolis.


Over the weekend, Morris, a junior, swept the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57:18 and a 2:07.18 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Morris finished with the top time for the Cardinals, placing fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke.


Speed is the main aspect of competition the team needs to focus on at this point in the schedule, coach Bob Thomas said.


Morris was also a part of the victorious 200-yard medley relay team also consisting of senior Michael Weber and juniors Drew Tharp and Michael Oaks. The team timed in at 1:34.92.


Junior Jake Brehmer was the top diver for the Cardinals, placing third in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. He finished with marks of 255.07 and 276.37, respectively.


Oaks is another swimmer consistently placing in the top stops for Ball State. He finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.90. He also took second in the 200-yard freestyle finishing in 1:44.46.


Weber turned in a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke timing in at 52.38 while placing third in the 200-yardbackstroke timing in at 1:57.03.


Tharp came in second in the 100-yard butterfly in 51:36.


Sophomore Conner Snare finished second in the 400 IM timing in at 4:22.45.


The Cardinals finished the meet placing second out of three teams, defeating the hosting Jaguars a close 70-63 though falling short to the Musketeers, 58-73.


Ball State is back in action this Saturday at 2 p.m., in the Lewellen Aquatic Center taking on Eastern Michigan.
