Ball State holds touchdown lead over Army at halftime

Fumble returned for touchdown brought back after illegal forward pass by Lee

Score: Ball State 17, Army 10

Two plays into the second quarter, Ball State found itself attempting the first field goal of the afternoon.

Kicker Steven Schott had just enough power to get the 49-yard field goal through the uprights and give Ball State a 17-7 lead early in the quarter.

Ball State forced another three-and-out on the next drive and looked to be in position to score more points again. But Keith Wenning got hit from behind when he went to throw, and the pass ended up in an Army defender's arms.

Army moved quickly with the ball following the interception but couldn't turn it into a touchdown. Kicker Dan Grochowski put through a 24-yard field goal to cut Ball State's lead to 17-10 with 5:22 left in the half.

After a quick stop on defense, the Black Knights got the ball back to try and get more points before halftime. But Army couldn't get any points after fumbling the ball away. Initially ruled a recovery taken back for a touchdown, the officials ruled that linebacker Kenneth Lee made an illegal forward pass to Jonathan Newsome on the play.
