CROSS COUNTRY: Ball State takes home invitational

MaryKate Mellen finishes first individually

Ball State's cross country team beat out Marian and Indianapolis on Friday, finishing with a time of 18:49.08, a season best for the team.

Many of Ball State's runners set career highs in the 5k race and all eight of the runners finished in the top 10. Senior MaryKate Mellen finished first in the Ball State Invitational with a career-best 18:08.70 despite the cooler temperatures. She said the cold and wet conditions didn't hurt her.

"I run my best in the cold, so it probably helped me," Mellen said. "It really didn't affect us that much because the ground wasn't mushy; it was still pretty firm."

Sophomore Courtney Edon finished second with a time of 18:25.20, also a career best. Freshman Katelyn DeVries continued her season by finishing just behind Edon, at a career-best 18:29.70.

Assistant coach Ali Bishel said she has been particularly impressed with DeVries this season. Bishel credited DeVries hard work over the summer for her performances so far this season.

"Races are won in the summer, not in the fall," Bishel said. "She really pushed it in the summer."

Junior Esther Tirado finished fifth with 19:29.90, and senior Emilee Zets was right behind her, with 19:31.90.

Ball State will travel to Peoria, Ill., Friday for the Bradley Classic, starting at 4:30 p.m.
