Score: Ball State 13, Kent State 21
Kent State wasted no time getting on the board in the second quarter.
After starting just outside the red zone, running back Trayion Durham punched in the touchdown from a yard out to give his team the 7-0 lead.
Ball State responded on its next drive after starting with excellent field position. From its own 35-yard line, the Cardinals drove down the field and a pass from quarterback Keith Wenning to tight end Dylan Curry set up a 6-yard pass to wide receiver Jamill Smith. After the PAT, the game was tied at 7-7.
But Kent State wasted no time getting back on the scoreboard as Dri Archer returned the kickoff 99 yards for a quick touchdown.
The Cardinals came back on their drive and got inside the red zone for a third time in the game. An overthrow by Wenning to wide receiver Chris Shillings made Ball State settle for a 31-yard field goal to cut the Kent State lead to 14-10, midway through the second quarter.
Kent State answered by scoring on its third consecutive possession, this time a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Spencer Keith to Archer after safety Brian Jones was burned on the play.
Right before the half, Ball State got another field goal from Schott, this one from 44-yards to cut the lead to 21-13.
