South Florida responds with touchdown, PAT blocked

Score: Ball State 10, South Florida 9

Ball State's defense stood up well on the first two plays of the second quarter, stopping two running plays to force South Florida to punt.

The Cardinals got the ball back and running back Jahwan Edwards made a pair of nice runs on consecutive plays to get the ball in South Florida territory.

After picking up two crucial third downs, quarterback Keith Wenning found wide receiver Willie Snead on a slant route for 21 yards down to the South Florida 3-yard line. On the next play, Edwards fought his way for a three-yard touchdown run to put Ball State up 10-3 with 7:18 left in second quarter.

South Florida responded quickly, its first play a keeper from quarterback B.J. Daniels that went for 19 yards and into Ball State territory.

The visitors scored its first touchdown of the game on a shovel pass from Daniels to running back Lindsey Lamar from 15-yards out. Ball State's Joel Cox came up with a huge play as he blocked the extra-point attempt to keep his team up 10-9 with 3:27 left in the second quarter.

A personal foul penalty helped keep Ball State's next drive alive after stalling on the first two plays. Ball State moved the ball to the South Florida 38-yard line before being forced to punt with 49 seconds remaining.

South Florida wasn't able to get into scoring position, as Ball State safety Brian Jones intercepted Daniels' pass as the first half expired, keeping the Cardinals' 10-9 lead.
