FOOTBALL: Ball State scores twice, extends lead in third quarter

Wenning throws first touchdown of game to Smith, Cardinals lead 24-19

Score: Ball State 24, South Florida 19

Ball State started the second half moving the ball well against the South Florida defense on runs by running back Jahwan Edwards and a 10-yard pass to wide receiver Jamill Smith.

Quarterback Keith Wenning came up with another big pass to Smith for 23 yards on third and 14 to get to the 32-yard line. Ball State benefited on a personal foul penalty after an incomplete pass to put the ball at the South Florida 18-yard line.

The Cardinals finished off the drive with a one-yard keeper by Wenning to extend the team's lead to 17-9 with 8:45 left in the third quarter.

South Florida responded quickly with a 34-yard pass from B.J. Daniels to wide receiver Terrence Mitchell. A roughing the passer penalty added 15 more yards and put the ball at the Ball State 26-yard line.

The Bulls quickly got in the red zone, but the Cardinals' defense came up again and stopped Daniels for a three-yard loss on third down to force a field goal. South Florida converted the kick, cutting Ball State's lead to 17-12.

Smith helped Ball State start in excellent field position following a 40-yard return on the kickoff to the team's 46-yard line.

Ball State moved the ball well again and found Smith again in the corner of the endzone to put Ball State up 24-12 with 3:14 left in the third quarter.

South Florida got into Ball State territory quickly after a 24-yard screen pass. Daniels hit wide receiver Andre Davis for a 15-yard touchdown, cutting Ball State's lead to 24-19 before the third quarter ended.
