MEN'S GOLF: Merkel selected to play in NCAA Regional

Sophomore follows Eric Steger, who competed in same tournament in 2011

Following the Mid-American Conference Championships last weekend, Tyler Merkel won't have much of a break from golf.

The sophomore Ball State men's golfer was announced as a selection to play in the NCAA Regional on May 17-19 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The par-71 University of Michigan Golf Course will host the event, which is one six regional tournaments across the nation.

Merkel, who was recently named to the 2012 All-MAC First Team, follows Eric Steger as the second Ball State individual to play in the event in the last two years.

Five teams with the lowest scores and the individual with the lowest score by the end of the tournament will advance to the finals on May 29-June 3 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Merkel finished the 2011-12 season with a 73.47 18-hole average, leading the team.
