Merkel finishes with team's best score for seventh place

Hosting its only home event of the 2011-2012 season, the Ball State men's golf team placed third out of 15 teams this weekend in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Delaware Country Club.

Louisville won the tournament with an overall score of 1090 through three rounds of play. Austin Peay took second at 1100, just ahead of Ball State's score of 1113.

Sophomore Tyler Merkel, Ball State's No. 1 golfer, ended with the team's best score of the event with a six-over par 216, good enough for seventh place.

Brodie Williams continued to improve on his impressive junior campaign by posting a seven-over 217, putting him in eighth place.

Junior Joe Gasser tied for 20th with a 14-over score of 224. Junior Tony Lazzara was next on the team, shooting a 21-over 231 to tie for 43rd.

Junior Alex Stinson posted a 22-over 232 to tie for 46th, and sophomore Connor O'Neal finished with a 27-over 237 to round out the competing lineup.

Since it was home event, Ball State also had three players participate as individuals in the tournament.

Senior TJ Carpenter placed in a tie for 28th with a 16-over score of 226 and freshman Zach Yinger shot a 19-over 229 to tie for 39th.

Senior Zac Treash finished at 159 with only two rounds of play. He was disqualified in round two for unspecified reasons.

Ball State will now turn its attention to the Mid-American Conference Championships in Sugar Grove, Ill., on May 4-6.
