WOMEN'S TENNIS: MAC opponents dominate Ball State in weekend matches

Ashlyn Rang wins Ball State's only point in both matches

Holding onto a 1-7 record in its past eight matches, the Ball State women's tennis team needed a strong weekend to get its season back on track.

However, Buffalo and Akron had their own plans. Both teams beat Ball State this weekend by a combined score of 13-1.

In Friday's match agaisnt Buffalo, the Bulls started off the match by sweeping Ball State in doubles to win the first point.

The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Courtney Wild and sophomore Kristel Sanders lost 8-6, and the No. 2 doubles team of freshman Ashlyn Rang and senior Sarah Hebble lost 8-4. Finally, the No. 3 doubles team, senior Dena Boulieris and junior Lauren Pickrel lost 8-3.

The only player to win for Ball State over the weekend was Rang, who beat Kira Golenko 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-7. Rang played at the No. 4 singles spot for the first time all season.

She also broke a three-match losing streak on Friday.

Wild, the team's No. 1 singles player, lost 6-1, 6-0 to Tanvi Shah, her worst loss since Feb. 11 in Bloomington against the Hoosiers.

No. 3 singles player Kylee Johnson was beaten by Buffalo 6-3, 6-1.

Hebble, now at No. 5 singles, lost to Miranda Podlas in a close match, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.

With a 0-7 loss to Akron on Saturday, the Cardinals haven't won the doubles point since Feb. 29 at Butler.

Rang also almost beat her Akron opponent, Natalia Kuvakina, but lost 7-5, 6-2. Pickrel also played a good match against the Zips, but she also lost, 6-1, 7-5.

Johnson, a senior, also lost to Akron 6-0, 6-4.

The Cardinals will have two more chances to get another win before returning home to close out the season. They play Eastern Michigan on Friday and Toledo on Saturday. Both games are at 1 p.m.
