GYMNASTICS: Two named to All-MAC squad

Allen, Cotter earn opportunity to compete in postseason

Monday brought welcome news for Ball State gymnastics. Junior Nicole Allen and senior Julie Cotter were both awarded Mid-American Conference honors and the chance to advance as individuals into post-season competition.

Cotter was named to the All-MAC first team and named as an alternate on bars for the NCAA regional championship. Last weekend at the MAC Championships, Cotter finished with a score of 9.875. Her career-high score made Cotter the MAC Champion on the bars. Cotter is an alternate to Western Michigan's Caroline O'Brien.

Allen was awarded a spot to compete in the all-around competition at the NCAA regional competition in Auburn Ala., and named to the MAC second team. Last year Allen was named All-MAC first team. At MAC Championships this past weekend, Allen walked away with a seventh-place finish.

On April 7 Allen will travel to Auburn to compete in the all-around competition. Cotter will be able to join her teammate if O'Brien is unable to compete.

The NCAA selects two teams from the MAC to compete at the regional level. After the two teams are determined, five all-around competitors are selected to advance on from schools that have not been named top two. Once all-around gymnasts are determined, one individual specialist is named on vault, bars, beam and floor. One alternate is selected for every specialist and one for all-around.
