GYMNASTICS: Spring Break on hold for Cardinals with Friday meet

Ball State hosts Bowling Green with its sights set on rebounding from two losses last week

While many Ball State students head out of Muncie for Spring Break, the Ball State gymnastics team will welcome the Falcons of Bowling Green State University for competition in Irving Gym today at 7 p.m.

"We are looking forward getting a good crowd and bringing up our score a lot," junior Morgan Coslow said. "Victory first and we will get to celebrate (Spring Break) after."

The coaching staff took a different approach in practice this week. They compiled the statistics of the best scores of the season to show how strong the team is on paper.

"When you compile that all into one meet, one day, one time, one team, they can show up and pull some big numbers," coach Nadalie Walsh said. "I think that they are really encouraged to see that on paper."

After an impressive performance at Michigan State and Western Michigan last weekend, all-around gymnast Nicole Allen is expected to have another great weekend. Allen won the all-around competition in both meets.

"It is so great to see her back in her element. Nicole is happy and smiling and confident," Walsh said. "When she gets into her grove and finds peace with her gymnastics she is pretty unstoppable."

The team will be without one of there leaders on bars Friday. Julie Cotter suffered an injury at Western Michigan, forcing her to take a break this weekend.

"She has a concussion from last meet," Walsh said. "We will be resting her this weekend, but we have such depth on bars we will be fine."

While Spring Break has been a slight distraction for the team this week, Walsh said she has done her best to keep them focused.

"I keep telling them ‘You aren't on Spring Break tomorrow. You are on Spring Break Saturday so I want you all to show up Friday and don't worry about what is happening the day after,'" Walsh said.

The energy from it being a home meet should help the team focus even with a five-day break from school in the back of the gymnasts' minds.

"The girls are ready with there gymnastics," Walsh said. "We are happy to be back home we love competing at home."
