The Ball State women's golf team opened its spring season with a 12th place finish out of 17 teams in the Claud Jacobs Invitational in Victoria, Texas.
Ball State's overall score of 983 with a low-round score of 321 put them five strokes behind Western Illinois and two ahead of fellow Mid-American Conference team Ohio.
The 12th place finish for Ball State was six spots lower than its performance in the same tournament last year, when it tied for sixth.
"It wasn't the start we were looking for," coach Katherine Mowat said. "I felt like we had a good mindset going in, but it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to."
Sophomore Meghan Perry ended the tournament with a team-best 242 to put herself in 33rd.
She finished four shots lower than sophomore Sarah Westaway's score of 246, which was good enough for 48th. Westaway also shot a 78 in round two for Ball State's lowest score of the tournament.
After playing through most of her freshman campaign on the back end of the lineup, Perry has steadily risen into a role as one of Ball State's best golfers this season.
"She has come a long, long way," Mowat said of Perry. "You can never really predict what kind of golfer someone's going to turn out to be, but she continues to impress me and she did a solid job for us."
Senior Katie Windlan finished in a tie for 54th with a 248. Junior Autumn Duke came in tie at 61 with a 251, while sophomore Jenna Hague rounded out the lineup with a score of 260 to tie for 73rd.
Texas State ran away with the tournament title with an overall score of 901, 33 strokes better than second place team Missouri.
After round two was cut short on Sunday due to darkness, play resumed on Monday with the remainder of the second round and the final round.
Despite the unfortunate start, Mowat said she knows her team is capable of playing better the rest of the season than it showed.
"I know what they're capable of, and they want to do well and show me they'll do anything they can to have good tournaments from here on out."
