WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Undefeated season ends with pair of losses

Sophomore says team will need to come together in preparation for MAC Tournament

With the goal of an undefeated season no longer possible, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team isn't dwelling on the two losses this weekend. Instead, the team is focusing on getting better for the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Ball State lost 178-122 on Friday to Miami and 185-115 to Toledo on Saturday.

"These teams were tough, I knew this was coming," coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said. "This is hard cold facts. It's black and white, their times were faster than ours. You always think you can do something different to beat them. We did that against Michigan State and Akron. You can't do it all the time."

Seibold-Caudill said even though Ball State had more depth than Toledo in Saturday's meet, the fact that the Rockets had four swimmers that could post very fast scores enabled them to win. She also said she felt her team was mentally frustrated as the meet progressed.

Sophomore Haley Richter said she felt certain individuals on the team performed well over the weekend, but pointed that the team will be able to come together in a month for the MAC Championships.

"I think that if we have more positive attitudes, we will do a lot better in a month," Richter said.

Richter added that there are a number of things Ball State can learn from this weekend's two losses.

"We can learn from our mistakes," she said. "It can only affect us positively. Now we have a lot to learn from. We have something to build off of and before we hadn't lost. Now reality has kind of hit us and a lot of us are going to learn from what happened this weekend."

One positive that Ball State can take out from this weekend's meets were the results that came from the two divers.

Seniors Whitney Adams and Christina Riordan both qualified for the NCAA Zone meet. Both divers qualified last season, but Adams decided not to compete and Riordan couldn't because of a foot injury she sustained before the meet.

For now, Seibold-Caudill will get her team focused so they can rebound in time for the MAC Championships. She said she has no doubt her team will be able to rebound.

"We've got to get back to where we were," she said. "Of any team I've ever had, I think this team can do it. There's no doubt in my mind."
