The Ball State women's swimming and diving team hadn't had a meet in five weeks but it didn't slow down the team on Friday against Eastern Illinois. In fact, the Cardinals had their best meet of the season with a 203-74 win over the Panthers to stay undefeated.
The meet was won convincingly as Ball State placed first in all 16 events on the evening.
Even with the five weeks off since the last meet, a win against Big Ten opponent Michigan State, coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said she wasn't nervous about the meet.
"They're used to [the time off]," Seibold-Caudill said. "It kind of threw them off at the beginning, but about half way through the meet they got back into the groove."
From the very first event, the 200 yard medley, Ball State swept the top three spots. The team of Katelyn Pratt-Collins, Bridgette Ruehl, Sara Hostetler and Mallory Przybylinski took first in the event.
In the three meter diving, Whitney Adams broke the school record with a score of 318.67.
The team is still figuring out a lineup to use once Mid-American Conference competition begins and for the MAC Championships. Friday's meet allowed Seibold-Caudill and her team to use swimmers in different events to help get an idea for a lineup.
"We swam really well and we did some off-events," she said. "We did that just to make some decisions for a conference lineup since that's right around the corner. This is a meet I could do that.
Ball State won't get much time to enjoy the victory as the team travels to Illinois State today for a meet at 1 p.m. Last season, the Cardinals beat the Redbirds 195-101 at Lewellen Pool. But Seibold-Caudill said last season's meet has no indication on how Saturday's meet will fair for her team.
"Whenever they come here we can beat them soundly," Seibold-Caudill said. "When we go there it's a different story. They do a lot better in their home pool."
She even admitted she's nervous about the meet and said the meet could be decided by the divers.
"They're just tough," she said. "They're always ready for us."
