MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Five key matches for Ball State this season

Ball State schedule headlined by Quincy, Cal-State Northridge

1. Feb. 11 – Ball State vs. Quincy

If Ball State needed any more reasons to crave a win over Quincy, it came last week when both teams were tied for fourth in the Preseason Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Coaches Poll. After Quincy upset Ball State in the quarterfinals of the MIVA Tournament last season, it can only be expected the Cardinals will be out for revenge in their first meeting with the Hawks since that defeat. Consider the rematch will take place on Ball State's home court, the site of the postseason loss, and it's a setup for redemption.

2. Feb. 2 – Ball State vs. Loyola

This will be Ball State's first conference match of the season and it comes against the recently named preseason favorite to win the MIVA in Loyola. The Cardinals didn't appreciate being named fourth in the conference last preseason, so if they feel the same now, this will be a perfect chance to assert themselves in the conference with a win.

3. March 7 – Ball State at Cal-State Northridge

Cal-State Northridge is a tough team to pinpoint right now, but this will be the first of three West Coast matches for Ball State. The other two will be back-to-back contests against Grand Canyon on March 9-10. It's the team's lone trip westward this season, but if Cal-State Northridge manages to beat Ball State, it could create a landslide effect with the road trip in their next two matches. Since this comes in the second half of the season, it'll be crucial to avoid losses to stay in contention with the rest of the conference. Ball State will need to win here to carry consistent momentum into a series of MIVA road matches.

4. March 18 – Ball State vs. Ohio State

If there's ever a season for Ball State to take down Ohio State, the current NCAA and MIVA champion, this is it. Ohio State lost a large portion of its championship-starting lineup and will be regrouping this season to retain its contending form. Ball State lost a quality senior class as well, but it's kept enough of its players to make this an interesting match-up, at least in early January.

5. Feb 18 – Ball State vs. IPFW

This used to be one of the most heated rivalries in men's volleyball, and while it's lost a little bit of this luster in recent years, it's still a match-up that remains entertaining to see. IPFW is another MIVA team with several questions surrounding how it will play this season, but Ball State has the talent to beat them, especially at home.
