WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State looking to continue streak at IUPUI

Cardinals off to 4-0 start heading into House of Champions meet

Off to a 4-0 start to the 2011-12 season, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team looks to keep its unbeaten streak going at the IUPUI House of Champions this weekend.

Coach Laura Seibold-Caudill credits her squad's start to its mental set early in the season.

"It's all about attitude," she said. "We have a very talented group of ladies that have a tremendous work ethic, a great attitude and they don't want to lose. You put that combination together and that's a great chemistry that we have."

Seibold-Caudill said the chemistry her team has this year is different than in previous years. She said there is the possibility her team is working harder because this is her last season but didn't want to take away from the team has accomplished so far.

One aspect she said was the large freshmen class from last year – now sophomores – has a season of experience it is using this year. The team's seniors have also contributed and have stepped up in leadership positions.

Ball State's unbeaten start almost ended last weekend against Akron. While the team won 155-145, it was down by 26 points with four events remaining. Seibold-Caudill said she thought it was nearly impossible for the team to make a comeback from that deficit.

"The fact that we did that I still think to myself, ‘How the heck did we win that meet?'" she said.

The Cardinals finished first, second and third in the fourth-to-last event, which fueled the comeback win.

"That's what this team is made of this season," Seibold-Caudill said. "They're geared up to have a successful season."

Ball State has yet to lose at the IUPUI House of Champions, which begins today. Seibold-Caudill said she would like to stay unbeaten in the event in her final season, but she knows it won't be an easy accomplishment.

Three teams that will challenge Ball State at the event will be Xavier, Saint Louis and host IUPUI.

"It's going to be tough, every year it is," Seibold-Caudill said. "I think we can do it. Our mission is to go in and win that meet."
