Midway through the second day of the Doug Coers Invitational, Ball State held a slim lead over second-place Marshall University heading into the 800 yard freestyle relay. The winner of the event would almost surely be in position to win the invitational.
Marshall's relay team started off fast and took a healthy lead that continued into the third leg of the event. Then the relay started turning in favor of Ball State.
Junior Jillian Bischoff cut into Marshall's lead by being a second quicker with a time of 1:57.29. Then sophomore Emily Wisolek took over. In her leg, she took the lead in the final hundred yards to secure the win.
Coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said winning the 800 yard freestyle was key to her team's win in the invitational. Ball State scored 734 points. Marshall came in second place with 550 points.
"It was one of those events that helped us turned the corner," Seidbold-Caudill said. "It was a really close meet and that helped us make sure that we took care of business and what we needed to do to beat Marshall."
The intensity of the invitational was higher in the second day than in the first day, which is normal especially when the scores are close.
"The men's and women's team become really close during this event, it makes it really intense," Seibold-Caudill said.
Senior Sara Hostetler said she was pleased with how her squad competed, especially after winning the key 800 yard freestyle.
"I think we did well, we pulled together as a team and got the win," she said.
Seibold-Caudill said she was pleased with how her team came together during the meet, which was a main focus this weekend.
"Our whole season is based on teamwork and making team come first," she said. "Swimming is an individual sport and if we can get everybody to support each other, it gives them a reason to swim. It was really neat to hear all the team support from everyone."
More importantly for the Cardinals, they are now 6-0 with their next meet on Dec. 10 against Big Ten opponent Michigan State.
