WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Libero wins award for fourth straight week

Fredrich claims MAC Defensive Player of Week award for fourth time

Mid-American Conference Play has brought out the best in Catie Fredrich.

For the fourth week in a row, the sophomore libero has been named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. It is the first time a player has earned the award four consecutive times in a season.

Fredrich's season statistics continued to improve in Ball State's last two matches. She tied her career-high with 31 digs against Miami on Friday and earned 16 the next night playing Bowling Green.

The winning ace for Ball State that defeated Miami came from Fredrich. With the score 24-23, the sophomore libero halted a late rally by the RedHawks that would have resulted in a 2-2 tie had they won the game.

Her weekend results improved her digs-per-set average to 5.34 in MAC play, placing her second in the conference behind only Eastern Michigan's Haley Stein.

Coach Steve Shondell said Fredrich has blossomed into a player he can rely on to always play well.

"It just shows she's playing consistent, week-in and week-out and playing at a high level," Shondell said. "That's really a great testament to any athlete to be able to play consistently well four consecutive weekends. You have to tip your hat to her for accomplishing something that's never been done before."
