MEN'S TENNIS: Four BSU players advance to quarterfinal rounds of Ball State Invitational

Heavy winds forces tournament to YMCA center to resume play

Despite a hectic first day at the Ball State Invitational Friday, the Ball State men's tennis team settled in at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center to have four of its singles players advancing to the quarterfinal round Saturday morning.

Senior Derek Carpenter advanced after a two-set victory over IPFW and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Junior Alex Doherty also advanced after a couple two-set wins over IUPUI and IPFW.

In singles flight A, junior Dalton Albertin defeated Duquesne's Max Rubin 7-5, 6-1 while junior Austin Sansone defeated IUPUI's Ivan Mojsevjev 6-7(4), 7-6 (4), 1-0 (4).

Coach Bill Richards said it was a challenge playing at the YMCA location.

"It's very, very difficult because you're trying to play a tournament on half as many indoor courts as you do outdoors," he said. "It changes your whole schedule and puts you way behind schedule. Now we have to make it all up in the next couple days."

Richards said despite the change in venue, Ball State showed very good poise on the court.

"I think our guys handled it pretty well," he said. "I think we did a good job with the whole mental part of it today."

Ball State will resume play in the Ball State Invitational Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
