MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State goes 11-1 in singles in second day of BSU Invitational

Coach wants better play out of team in doubles matches

After day two of the Ball State Invitational Saturday, the Ball State men's tennis team found itself in a familiar situation: looking for consistency on both ends of the court.

In its singles matches, Ball State went 11-1 overall. Junior Alex Doherty, freshman Patrick Elliott and sophomore Austin Smith will play in the semifinals in the Cardinal flight today at 8:30 a.m. after winning their respective matches in straight sets. Senior Derek Carpenter was the lone Cardinal in the Cardinal flight to lose his quarterfinal match, losing to Wisconsin-Green Bay's Michael Tebon 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (7).

In the Flight A quarterfinals, freshman Ray Leonard defeated teammate Dalton Albertin 7-6 (3), 6-1. He will play Wisconsin-Green Bay's Paul Swanson at 8:30 a.m. today in the semifinal round.

On the doubles side, Ball State's play was inconsistent. In the Cardinal flight, the twosome of Doherty/junior Austin Sansone and junior Alexandre Brym/A. Smith lost their opening matches 8-6 and 8-5, respectively.

Coach Bill Richards said he was disappointed with the play of both doubles teams.

"I didn't think Brym and Austin Smith played at the level they need to play," he said. "And the same with Doherty and Sansone."

On a positive note, freshman Patrick Elliott won the White doubles flight with Marquette's Cam Tehrani due to an emergency for the other team, Northern Illinois.

"Overall, I think we had a good day," Richards said."It was a good day in singles and disappointing in doubles. It was certainly not what we had hoped for in doubles, but we know we have some work to do there. We haven't spent a tremendous amount of time on it this year and now we're kind've feeling our way into the doubles part of it."

Ball State will wrap up play in the Ball State Invitational today. First serve is 8:30 a.m.
