The NCAA Division I board of directors will vote on an academic requirement for postseason play Friday, according to USA Today.
President Mark Emmert said if the vote is approved, it could ban teams from participating in the 2012 NCAA Tournament if they do not reach the academic requirement.
The plan proposes that any team must have a minimum Academic Progress Rate score of 900 to be eligible for postseason play. If the proposal is approved, Emmert said there would also be a stipulation the that APR requirement must be raised to 930 in the next 24 months.
If the proposal does pass, Ball State men's basketball team could be one of the teams banned from participating if it makes it to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, 33 Division I men's basketball programs were under the 900 benchmark.
Ball State had an APR of 892 last season, eight points below the proposed minimum.
Had the minimum been in place for the 2011 NCAA Tournament, national champion Connecticut would not have been eligible because its APR was 893.
Other teams that have an APR below 900 include Arkansas, Missouri State and Toledo.
