FOOTBALL: Oklahoma blows game open in second quarter

Wenning throws first interception of season

NORMAN, Okla. – After Ball State cut the deficit to four points early in the second quarter, No. 2 Oklahoma's offense opened up the game with 28 unanswered points. The Sooners lead the Cardinals 38-6 at halftime.

Steven Schott kicked his second field goal of the game, a 31-yard attempt, less than two minutes into the second quarter. Ball State trailed the No. 2 team in the nation by just four points. But from that point, the Sooners took control of the game.

First, the Oklahoma offense drove 91 yards on nine plays for its first touchdown of the quarter. Then, on the ensuing possession, the Sooners' defense tipped a pass by quarterback Keith Wenning high into the air. The ball fell into the hands of linebacker Tony Jefferson and ended Wenning's streak of 186 pass attempts without an interception. Wenning last threw a pick in last November's victory against Akron.

Oklahoma took over the ball at the 10 yard line and wasted no time in extending its lead to 18-points on Landry Jones touchdown pass to Kenny Stills.

From there, the rout was on.

Wenning was intercepted two more times in the quarter and the Sooners kept finding the end zone. The first four times Oklahoma got the ball in the quarter, it scored a touchdown. That streak ended when Jones overthrew his intended target and safety Kyle Hoke got his first interception of the season.

Ball State's most productive offensive player in the first half was wide receiver Tori Gibson. Linebacker Tony Martin leads the Cardinals with eight tackles.

Jones has completed 19 of 29 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Dominique Whaley has 96 yards and two touchdowns on 12 rushes.
