WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Purdue wins battle of the Shondells 3-1 over Ball State

Purdue dominates after Ball State steals first set

The Battle of the Shondells went in Dave's favor Saturday night.

Ball State made an early statement by taking the first game 25-23. But Purdue responded well and didn't let up for the rest of the match, winning three straight games to take the match 3-1.

Purdue was named the Tournament champion of the Active Ankle Challenge.

Kelsey Brandl finished the match with 10 kills and was honored as a member of the All-Tournament team.

"After the first game I think we relaxed a little bit and kind of got a little overexcited," Brandl said. "They came back and were really pissed off. They showed us that they could be a better team than we just beat. They came back and started hitting the ball a lot harder at us. They overpowered us for the next few games."

Jennifer Boyd was also named to the All-Tournament team. She collected 8 kills against Purdue.

Catie Fredrich led the Cardinals on defense with 19 digs.

Even with the loss, Boyd said Ball State will leave West Lafayette even more motivated than they were when they entered it.

"Ever since preseason, Steve has been talking about this match," Boyd said. "It shows that even though we worked hard, we still have a lot more to work. I know its definitely motivating me."
