MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals 11th out of 15 teams in Iowa

Junior Gasser shoots 70 in first round to lead Ball State

The Ball State men's golf team is 11th out of 15 teams at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa after the first of three rounds.

The Cardinals are seven-over-par after 18 holes — 21 strokes from the leading team Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Junior Joe Gasser leads the Ball State golfers after one round carding a 70 tying for eighth. He is three strokes off individual leader Stephan Jaeger from Chattanooga.

Sophomore Tyler Merkel is tied for 29th after posting 73. After getting a 75, junior Tony Lazzara is tied for 46th. Senior TJ Carpenter is in 64th after a five-over-par 77 and junior Alex Stinson is 74th with an 84.

Other schools competing in the challenge are Arkansas, California, Chattanooga, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Kennesaw State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, North Texas, Oklahoma State, Southeast Louisiana, Tulsa, UC-Irvine and Xavier.

Second round play will begin today and will finish with 18 holes Tuesday at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
