MEN'S GOLF: Ball State ends third tournament in seventh place

Merkel leads Cardinals with -2 during Golfweek Conference Challenge

Ball State men's golf finished out the Golfweek Conference Challenge holding on to a seventh place finish, after finishing in seventh after the second round. The team shot an overall 883 (+19), while Arkansas won the tournament with a score of 859 (-5).

"We did very well yesterday and held on well today to keep pace," coach Mike Fleck said. "It wasn't that we played bad, it was just a difficult field. These were some of the best teams with some of the best players in the country."

Sophomore Tyler Merkel led the team with a fourth place tie and a score of 214 (-2). Junior Joe Gasser tied for 18th with a score of 220 (+4). Senior TJ Carpenter finished tied for 31st while shooting a 223 (+7). Juniors Tony Lazzara and Alex Stinson rounded out the Cardinal lineup, with Lazzara tied for 44th, shooting a 226 (+1), and Stinson in 72nd place shooting a 241 (+25).

Other teams in the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa included: Tennessee-Chattanooga, Oklahoma State, New Mexico, California, Iowa, Georgia Tech, New Mexico State, Tulsa, Kennesaw State, Southeastern Louisiana, North Texas, Xavier and UC-Irvine.

The Cardinals will look to improve next weekend when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla., for The Miromar Lakes Collegiate on Sunday and Monday.
