SOFTBALL: Pitching woes plague Cardinals heading into MAC tournament

Ball State plays Eastern Michigan in the opening round

The Ball State softball team picked a bad time of the season to hit a slump.

Losing five out of its last six games to end the season, Ball State looks to get back to its winning ways Wednesday, when it plays Eastern Michigan in the opening round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

Coach Craig Nicholson said despite Ball State's recent struggles, it has shown it can handle adversity in the past.

"We've shown the ability to bounce back through some tough times over the course of the year," Nicholson said. " I'm not too worried about things from that standpoint. We have got to do some things a little bit better physically on the field, but as far as our emotional standpoint and where we're at, I think we're OK."

Ball State's pitching staff is one area of concern heading into the postseason. In the past six games, Ball State pitchers have walked 36 batters and given up 46 runs.

Eastern Michigan, who is hitting .314 as a team and scoring a little over 5.3 runs per game, may give Ball State problems on the mound.

Nicholson said there really isn't anything Ball State needs to spend time fixing heading into its match-up with Eastern Michigan Wednesday.

"There's really nothing we need to go and spend a large amount of time working on," Nicholson said. "We need to be a little more consistent, but you're not going to fix that in practice. You just got to go out and play the game and be consistent."

Ball State travels to Akron, Ohio Wednesday to play Eastern Michigan in the opening round of the MAC Tournament. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
