TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State heating up for Mike Poehlein Invitational

Cardinals still limited with injuries and illnesses to key athletes

The Ball State track and field team's wishes for warmer weather may come true this weekend.

The athletes will be competing in the Mike Poehlein Invitational at Purdue, starting at 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.

The event will host a variety of different colleges, including IPFW, Notre Dame, University of Indianapolis, DePaul and Butler.

Last week, the team performed well in every event despite bitter cold weather.

"It was cold - didn't snow, but it was ridiculously cold," coach Randy Heisler said. "When it gets like that in a track meet, you are really looking more at the competition part of the day as opposed to great performances. You don't expect someone to run really fast when it is literally 10 degrees below freezing.

Injuries and illnesses are still issues within the Cardinals.

"[Ra'Jae Marable] has a sinus infection," Heisler said. "We think that she has to get on some drugs and it could take days." Heisler said, "Megan is actually going to the doctor this week for some more medical procedures. We are looking for her to go to Miami next weekend."

If Marable competes this weekend, she will be racing in the 4x100 relay, 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash.

After a two first place finishes last weekend, Thekla Lorenz will be racing in five events at Purdue. Her events include long jump, 4x100 relay, 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay.

Janae Taylor had four top-three wins last weekend and will be racing in the 4x400-meter relay, 200-meter dash, 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay.

Thrower Jorden Traver is scheduled to compete in the hammer throw, shot put, javelin throw and discus throw.

Teammate Lywanna Melvin will be competing in hammer throw and discus throw, while Jordan Puckett will join them in the hammer throw.

Kate Krull and Melissa Dodaro will cover the shot put and discus throw events.

In jumping events, Alyssa Hurburt will represent the Cardinals. Hurburt is entered in the long jump and triple jump events.

Rebecca Lomax will be running and jumping this weekend. She will jump in the high jump event and run in the 4x100 relay and 100-meter dash. Lomax placed first last weekend in high jump.

Allison Blanck will be running in the 5,000-meter run, while Madeline Goheen will compete in the 10,000-meter run.

Judah Smith will be running in the 400-meter dash, 200-meter dash and in the 4x400 relay.

Hannah Lange and Brandi Robinson will both be running in the 400-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 4x400 relay.

Christine Talhelm and Emilee Zets will both compete in the 800-meter run and 4x400 relay.

Esther Tirado will also join Talhelm, Zets and Robinson on a 4x400-meter relay team.
