BASEBALL: Ball State drops series opener

Back inflammation forces out Cal Bowling

Ball State's series opener versus Mid-American Conference West opponent Eastern Michigan mirrored last weekend's series opener against Central Michigan.

The outcome didn't favor Ball State, as Eastern Michigan cruised to a 13-1 victory.

Junior right-hander Cal Bowling was scheduled to start for Ball State, but due to sudden inflammation in his back, coach Alex Marconi pulled him.

Senior lefty Derek Grabner started in place of Bowling but proved to be no match for Eastern Michigan's offense.

The Eagles tagged Grabner for eight runs in 3 2/3 innings.

A seven-run fourth inning outburst capped off the pounding for Eastern Michigan.

Eastern Michigan notched its 10th victory of conference play, improving to 10-6, while Ball State dropped to (8-7) in conference play.

Game 2 is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.
