SOFTBALL: Ball State loses to Long Island, Connecticut

Team drops Friday games in Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.

It was a day full of mental errors and runners left on base for the Ball State softball team.

Playing in the sun in front of a crowd of spectators, the Cardinals start the 2011 Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. cold as ice, losing 3-1 to Long Island in the afternoon and Connecticut 6-2 in the evening.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Audra Sanders pitched all seven innings in the loss against the Blackbirds, giving up nine hits and three runs.

Junior right-handed pitcher Kim Mazzapica pitched four strong innings for Ball State against the Huskies, giving up only one run and five hits.

But four errors committed by the defense in the fifth inning resulted in five more runs being charged to Mazzapica's total, giving her a total of six earned runs for the game.

Senior shortstop Alicia Barkley led the way offensively for the Cardinals with five hits and one run while sophomore outfielder Amanda Carpenter added two hits, one run, and an RBI.

The Cardinals continue play in the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. Saturday, when they play Quinnipiac and No. 1 ranked Florida. First pitch is at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
