Ball State's 68-51 loss to Western Michigan Saturday afternoon eliminated the possibility of the Cardinals hosting a first round game in the Mid-American Conference.
The Cardinals fell into an early hole against the Broncos in the first half by only shooting 36 percent from the field. The Broncos shot 50 percent from the field and led 43-26 at halftime.
In the second half, both teams shot 33 percent from the field as Western Michigan pulled kept its distance from Ball State to hold on to the win.
Senior forward Emily Maggert led all scorers with 18 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Ty'ronda Benning scored 11 points and also had six rebounds.
No other Cardinal had more than six points on the night.
Western Michigan's Taylor Manley led her team with 16 points and had five assists. The Broncos also had four other players score a combined 34 points.
The loss puts Ball State at 9-19 overall with a 4-11 record in the MAC and as the current tenth seed for the MAC Tournament. Western Michigan gained a game on Ball State, moving to 5-10 in the MAC.
With one regular season game to play, the highest seed Ball State can earn is the ninth seed, which would still not allow them to play a home game in the first round of the MAC Tournament, which begins on March 8.
