SOCCER: Ball State finds positives in loss

Despite a 2-0 loss to Central Michigan marred by inclement weather, poor field conditions and physical play from both teams, Ball State was able to come away with a few positives Sunday.

Freshman goalkeeper Layne Schramm put forth a solid effort for the second straight game and is displaying more confidence in the net.

"She's been showing positive movement the past couple games," coach Craig Roberts said. "She's shown some maturity, consistency and she still has a lot of room to grow."

A combination of the two-goal deficit, injuries and sophomore Sarah Orisich getting sent off after her second yellow card allowed Roberts to substitute liberally and use different combinations of players.

"It's basically just to see what they got," he said. "We had to try and use different combinations to see what worked the best for us."

Two freshman, midfielder Maggie Hamilton and defender Kelsey Shapiro, saw extended time on the field, as did sophomore midfielder Maggie Brown.

With one match remaining in a difficult season, the Cardinals simply want to get a Mid-American Conference win on the board.

"We have to give it all we have and try and get a win," sophomore Amanda Dreyfus said. "We have to keep up the intensity we played with today."

Ball State's last chance to get a MAC victory is Thursday at 3 p.m. against MAC-leading Toledo.
