MEN'S GOLF: Ball State third after first day of tournament

The Ball State men's golf team is third out of 12 teams with a score of 580, four over, in the Renaissance Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla.

Florida Gulf Coast leads the pack at 573 (3-), while Xavier is close behind at 578 (1+).

Individually, Ball State senior Eric Steger is tied for fifth place with 142 (2-), two strokes behind leader Brandon Pena, from Florida Golf Coast. Cardinals' freshman Tyler Merkel is tied for 15th with 145 (1+).

The final round of the Renaissance Invitational will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. and will conclude around 2 a.m.
