FOOTBALL: Ball State trails 21-0 after first quarter

Western Michigan defensive end taken away from game in ambulance

Western Michigan stunned Ball State to start the game, scoring two touchdowns in the first 59 seconds on Homecoming and leads 21-0 after the first quarter.

The Broncos' quick start had a pall cast over it when defensive end Deauntay Legrier had to be taken away from the game in an ambulance after an apparent neck injury. Legrier was hit head-on by safety Demetrius Pettway as they both tried to tackle running back Cory Sykes.

Ball State turned the ball over four times in the first quarter and gained just 14 yards of offense.

The game went poorly from the coin flip for the Cardinals, which was won by the Broncos.

They elected to defer until the second half and kicked off to start the game. Running back Eric Williams fumbled the opening kickoff and the Broncos recovered. Quarterback Alex Carder quickly found the end zone with a 20-yard rush.

Ball State's first offensive possession didn't go any better as cornerback Lewis Toler jumped Keith Wenning's first pass of the game for a touchdown.

Wenning was intercepted again on the first play of the Cardinals' second possession, but the Broncos were unable to take advantage when John Potter missed a 30-yard field goal.

Carder added another touchdown run with just more than six minutes to play in the quarter to give Western Michigan a 21-0 lead.
