FOOTBALL: Ball State starts quick at Toledo

Cardinals lead 17-0 after first quarter

TOLEDO, Ohio – Wide receiver Jack Tomlinson caught two touchdown passes and Ball State jumped out to a 17-0 lead at Toledo, the undefeated Mid-American Conference leaders.

Tomlinson caught a 42-yard touchdown with 7:40 to play in the opening period and then added a five-yard touchdown six minutes later. The touchdowns were the first of Tomlinson's career.

The Cardinals scored first on a 35-yard field goal from Ian McGarvey, capping their 51-yard opening drive.

Ball State's defense intercepted Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin twice in the first quarter. Middle linebacker Travis Freeman snagged the first of the game, and cornerback Jason Pinkston grabbed another one play after Tomlinson's touchdown.

Both Wenning and backup Kelly page have taken snaps as quarterback in the first quarter, but only Wenning threw a pass. The freshman went 7-for-11 for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Page rushed twice for 17 yards.
