With the low number of runners and throwers that were sent, there was some doubt the Ball State University track and field team would be able to place high at this weekend's Clark Woods/Lenny Lyles Invitational at the University of Louisville.
However, the Cardinals did not come away empty-handed.
Ball State finished last in the five-team meet, but it was able to post several top-10 finishes, coming away with 46 points.
Coach Randy Heisler did not return calls seeking comment on the meet.
Illinois State University won the team meet, finishing with 144 points. Host Louisville fell one point shy from being at the top of the leaderboard, followed by Central Michigan University (132 points) and Ohio State University (81 points).
Junior sprinter Ra'Jae Marable was the highest-placed Cardinal in an individual event. Marable finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.18 seconds.
In all, Ball State had 20 top-10 finishes, including 10 top-5 finishes.
Senior hurdler Jenna Schmitmeyer finished third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.93). Freshman pole vaulter Tara Spitzer-Long finished third with a height of 2.9 meters. Senior distance runner Sarah Kehe finished fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase run (11:36.91) while freshman MaryKate Mellen finished fifth (12:18.65). Freshman sprinter Judah Smith finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.55.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Schmitmeyer, Smith, Thekla Lorenz and Renyae Owsley finished third (3:58.68).
Lorenz accumulated points in multiple events for the Cardinals, finishing third in the javelin throw (33.29 meters) and fifth in the long jump (5.73 meters).
Ball State returns to action Saturday when it participates in the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis.
