TRACK: Ball State completes two-day event at Purdue

Five Cardinals place in Top 10

The Ball State University track and field team finished all events that mother nature allowed it to at Dave Rankin Track on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday evening. With the weather being dismal, five different Cardinal athletes had top-10 finishes.

Senior Katie Johnson ran the best individual performance for Ball State, finishing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.31 seconds. Junior Thekla Lorenz placed 10th in the same event with a time of 14.88 seconds. Lorenz also placed 15th in the shot put (11.41m).

Also placing in the top 10 in the 400 were sophomore Renyae Owsley (8th-57.98) and senior Janna Schmitmeyer (9th-58.77).

Freshman Judah Smith finished 6th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.57 seconds. She said she enjoyed getting the chance to run against runners from Purdue, Illinois, Notre Dame and Louisville.

"It was fun overall," Smith said. "The outside conditions weren't too great but it was a good experience nonetheless. It's always a wonderful experience because everything is new to me as a freshman."

Sweeping showers limited the amount of events for Ball State to participate in. It participated in only six of 20 events for Saturday's schedule.

Ball State will return to action at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio on April 9-10.
