SOFTBALL: Ball State breaks out of slump in big way with sweep of Bowling Green

Cardinals score a combined 29 runs in doubleheader

Ball State University's offense exploded for 29 combined runs in a doubleheader against Bowling Green State University Friday. The Cardinals used several big innings to defeat the Falcons 12-3 and 17-4 at the BSU Softball Complex.

In the first game, the Cardinals scored six runs in the first inning to get a lead they would hold for the rest of the game. Amanda Montalto had a homerun and five RBIs in the big win, and five players tallied at least two runs scored. Ball State was also aided by three Bowling Green errors and snapped their season-long four-game losing streak in the process.

The Cardinals picked up right where they left off in the second game, scoring five times in the first and second innings to take a 10-1 lead. After Bowling Green scored three in the top of the fourth to cut modestly into the lead, Ball State answered with seven more in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.

Lisa Rozanski and Alyssa Collins scored three runs apiece for the Cardinals, and Kristy Stratton chipped in off the bench with two RBIs.

Ball State (30-13, 8-4 Mid-American Conference) continues play today when it plays host to Toledo (9-30, 3-8 MAC) for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
