There were no stats, no score, no clock.
But there was real hitting at Ball State University's Spring Game.
The Cardinals escaped without injury, but there was a tense moment when running back Eric Williams got laid out near the sideline. He walked off the field on his own power, but not before trainers were called onto the field.
"It was a heck of a collision," coach Stan Parrish said. "He was a little bit groggy."
The game was no more than a scrimmage as the players weren't even divided into teams. Instead the 200 or so fans that went to Scheumann Stadium got to see about an hour of Ball State's offense taking on its defense.
Among those in attendance were plenty of future Cardinals. Parrish said almost all of the 2010 signing class was at the game and many players being recruited for the 2011 class.
The scrimmage wasn't ideal for Parrish, who said there were too many mistakes. Both Ian McGarvey and Steven Schott missed field goals and there were penalties called on both units.
Redshirt update: Tight end Madaris Grant still has not received word from the NCAA about his sixth year of eligibility. He has continued the rehab of his torn ACL and Parrish said he is close to 100 percent.
"Getting him back is critical," Parrish said. "He could have gone some today."
Parrish still believes Grant will be awarded the extra year of eligibility. He was injured in the first series of last year's opener against the University of North Texas.
