Hall of Fame coach Steve Shondell won't be making the one-mile move to become the new Ball State University women's volleyball head coach.
The Burris Laboratory School girls' volleyball head coach said Wednesday that he has no intention to apply for the coaching position or to leave the local high school.
"I could never see myself leaving Burris. It's just part of my blood," Shondell said. "As tempting as it might be, I just couldn't do it."
The Cardinals' coaching position opened after third-year coach Dave Boos announced Wednesday morning he was leaving Ball State reportedly to be an assistant coach at the University of Florida.
As Burris' head coach, Shondell has won 13 consecutive Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 2A championships and finished the 2009 season undefeated, including a sweep in the state championship match at Worthen Arena.
Prior to the start of his coaching career, Shondell played for the Ball State men's volleyball team in the 1970s and was named to the all-conference team twice. He is the son of Hall of Famer and former Ball State men's volleyball coach Don Shondell.
Steve Shondell said it would be difficult for him to quit coaching high school volleyball.
The coach said he would only ever consider leaving Burris for two colleges: Ball State and Purdue University — where his two brothers coach.
"I think high school was made for me," he said.
