WOMEN'S TENNIS: Two-week break comes at right time for Ball State

Cardinals go 1-2 over Spring Break matches

After losing two matches last week and falling to an overall record of 6-7, the Ball State University women's tennis team could use a break.

Fortunately, a break is just what the team is getting.

The Cardinals have two weeks off before they enter Mid-American Conference play.

Ball State has struggled lately, losing a close match 5-4 at DePauw University on Tuesday. This was followed by being blown out 7-0 by the University of St. Louis on Thursday.

Ball State had played using Division I rules all season, but was forced into playing against with Division III rules against DePauw. That meant the every doubles match counted as one point, instead of majority winner of all three matches earning that point.

The change proved to be Ball State's demise.

Even though the Ball State won four of the six singles matches - which would have been enough for a win in Division I rules - DePauw claimed victory in all three of the doubles matches. The sweep in doubles was enough to propel DePauw to the victory.

The loss proved to be a tough pill to swallow for Ball State, which was easily dispatched by St. Louis. While the doubles teams for Ball State did manage to win one match, the Cardinals had a much tougher time in singles, winning only one set in the contest.
