The Ball State University track and field teams opened their outdoor campaigns Saturday afternoon at the Polar Bear Invitational on the Indiana Wesleyan University campus. The Cardinals posted four first-place finishes in the non-team-scoring event.
Redshirt senior Brittany Ade won the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:50.03. Senior Jenna Schmitmeyer won in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a time of 1:04.59. The 4x400 meter relay team of Schmitmeyer, junior Thekla Lorenz, sophomore Renyae Owsley and freshman Judah Smith won the event with a time of 3:56.37.
Returning to action this spring is senior Ali Bishel, who was sidelined during the indoor season due to injury. Bishel won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 37:15.12.
Coach Randy Heisler was unavailable for comment following the meet.
Ball State also posted seven other top-three finishes. Sophomore Kelsey Stephens finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.14. Seniors Sarah Kehe and Kelsey Nielsen finished second and third in the 5,000 meter run with times of 18:47.88 and 18:48.93, respectively.
Lorenz had a great all-around performance after finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.95), second in the javelin (34.38m), tied for second in the high jump (1.57m) and third in the 200-meter dash (25.73).
Ball State returns to action next weekend when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for the two-day Mike Poehlein Invitational at Purdue.
