TRACK: Ball State plays host to Quadrangular in final tune-up before MAC Championships

Heisler hopes team gets enough rest in-between two meets

The Ball State University indoor track team wants to showcase exactly what it is capable of in its only home meet of the season. The Cardinals will get just that opportunity tonight when they play host to the 2010 Quadrangular at the Field Sports Building.

Ball State looks to add more top performances after having 13 top-10 finishes in last week's Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington.

Tonight's four-team meet will have more of a conference appeal to it as the other participants include Western Michigan University, Northern Illinois University and Miami University.

For freshman sprinter Judah Smith, she knows what significance the home meet has to her, her teammates and Ball State.

"It's very important because you only have one impression to make for a school," Smith said. "They only see us once. We have to show that we are actually good and that we are a division-one school."

Despite the strenuous practices, Smith believes that the team camaraderie will keep them strong and focused.

"Thinking positive and not complaining—it's all the motivation we'll need," she said.

Coach Randy Heisler understands the importance of the meet, especially to the outgoing seniors.

"It's the only time in four years that our seniors have had a chance to compete here, once a year and that's it," Heisler said. "These ladies have one opportunity to compete on campus and this is it."

With the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track Championships taking place in Mount Pleasant, Mich., next Friday, this meet does not allow much time for the team to rest.

Heisler said he could not believe the schedule that included tonight's meet when he first looked at it.

"In track and field, it's all about peaking and competing at the right day," Heisler said. "We don't do stuff at 80 percent. If you try to sprint at 80 percent, you'll get last."

The Quadrangular begins at 5 p.m. with the weight throw, pole vault, high jump and long jump events. The final event, the 4x400m relay, is expected to begin at 7:50 p.m.
