WOMEN'S TENNIS: With new coach, BSU wins opener over Dayton

Cardinals open with doubles loss before utilizing strong singles play to win match

The Ball State University women's tennis team opened its season Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 nailbiting win over visitors University of Dayton at the Muncie Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.

The match was also the first for interim coach Amy Behrman, who took over the program on Monday.

The Cardinals (1-0) opened the match by losing the doubles point — something they also did in last season's 4-3 loss to Dayton. But this time around, a little more experience for Ball State paid off, led by the charge of junior Hayley Hall.

Hall was the first to finish singles play with a relatively easy 6-0, 6-1 No. 2 singles win over Dayton's Loni Dickerhoof, setting the tone for the rest of the match to be in the Cardinals' favor.

Junior Georgina Thomson (No. 4 singles), sophomore Kylee Johnson (No. 5) and freshman Lauren Pickrel (No. 6) rounded out the singles winners for Ball State.

Senior Katherine Rist and freshman Paola Rodriguez won the only doubles match for the Cardinals, taking care of Dayton's Chelsea Glankler and Molly Mathews, 8-4.

Ball State returns to play Thursday for a 2 p.m. match against Wright State University, who the Cardinals shut out 7-0 last season.
