WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards come from behind to topple Illinois State

Senior Lisa Maertin wins both diving events for Ball State

After falling behind early, the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team rallied to beat Illinois State University 154-146 Saturday in Normal, Ill.

The Cardinals (6-4) lost the first four events before claiming wins in nine of the final 12 to take the win from the hosts.

The event wasn't settled until the final swim — the 400 freestyle relay. Ball State led by a hair, 143-140, going into the event, and the group of Joan Cullen, Jillian Bischoff, Nicole Saulters and Katie Bylsma (3:34.39) eventually won by six seconds, cementing the win for the Cardinals.

Senior Emily Karwoski led the way for the Cardinals with three wins on the day. Fellow senior Lisa Maertin won both diving events as well.

Ball State next swims on Saturday at Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan University.
