BASEBALL: Vitek picks up second preseason honor

Ping!Baseball names the junior third team All-American

For the second time this year, second baseman/pitcher Kolbrin Vitek has been named to a preseason All-American team. Ping! Baseball named the junior a third team All-American at the utility position.

Vitek was named second team All-American as a second baseman by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper last month. Vitek played third base and was Ball State University's Sunday starter last year, earning All-Mid-American Conference honors in the process. This year he will switch to second base when he is not on the mound.

Coach Greg Beals said the recognition means Vitek's play is being noticed across the country.

"It says a lot about what Kolbrin's already done," Beals said. "He had a fabulous sophomore year and a great summer. His name is out there as one of the best in the country."

Vitek hit .389 with 67 RBI, the second most in the conference. As a pitcher, he went 4-3 with a 5.65 ERA. Baseball America tabbed him as the top prospect in the Great Lakes League after he won the Triple Crown and was the league's All-Star Game MVP.

The only other MAC player named to the Ping! Team was Ohio University outfielder Gauntlett Eldemire. It is also Eldemire's second preseason All-American honor, as he was also selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association team.

"You have to take all preseason recognition with a grain of salt," Beals said. "But it's great recognition for Kolbrin."
